Loch Arkaig
Beautiful and remote, Loch Arkaig is a wonderful fresh water loch. There is an island to explore with ruins of an old church and a Bothy on the southern shore. There are lots of old stories and interesting folk lore surrounding this area, most of which can be learned about in the nearby Clan Cameron Museum. There is also a chance to see the local breeding pair of Osprey, if you’re lucky!
Bunarkaig Bay
World war 2 history paired with beautiful views up onto Ben Nevis and the Aonach Mor range make this a stunning place to SUP in Fort William. Bunarkaig bay is a serene freshwater location that can be nice a sheltered. Just up the loch towards Clunes you can find some sandy bays, some historic sites where they practiced D-Day Beach landings and some perfect picnic spots. If using this spot please park on the North side of the bridge or the car park at Clunes. Ensure you do not block the road or passing places.
Loch Eilt
Highly accessible and on the Road to the Isles, this fresh water loch is great for a SUP in Fort William. It has the added benefit of being positioned next to the railway which serves the Jacobite train, also known as the Hogwarts Express from the Harry Potter movies.
This is one for the Harry Potter fans, as at the western end of the loch, you will find ‘Dumbledores island’ where his body is put to rest in the movies. At the eastern end there is a tiny island, near the pin on this map, which can be seen in the movies when Hagrid is upset about Buckbeak and is skimming stones.
Loch Mora
The deepest loch in Scotland has its own Mora monster to look for, reportefdly related to Nessie! This beautiful freshwater, remote loch is the perfect place for a SUP in Fort William, with scenic and quiet beaches all along the Northern shore.
Please park considerately in the parking areas and do not block the roads, slip ways, bins or drive ways.
